A sustained period of individual leadership development.

Across the Breadth of Your Leadership
The Executive Year is designed for leaders who want to work across the full breadth of their leadership over time. An Intensive is focused on one central area of development. The Executive Year allows the work to evolve across roles, relationships, decisions, and changing responsibilities.
It Begins with Evidence
The year begins with a comprehensive diagnosis of the leader's current practice. This includes the Insight 360 Evaluation and the Insight Leadership Skill Assessment, along with a detailed examination of the leader's role, ambitions, organizational context, and recurring leadership challenges.
The purpose is to establish a clear evidence base.
Senior leaders often receive fragmented feedback. They may hear that they need to be more strategic, more confident, more collaborative, or more decisive. Those descriptions are too broad to guide meaningful development.
The Executive Year works to identify what those observations mean in practice.
What does the leader do when information is incomplete?
How does she respond when authority is unclear?
What happens when others resist?
How does she create direction?
What does she protect?
How does she manage competing demands for inclusion, speed, control, and accountability?
What patterns become more visible under pressure?
The year is then designed around the leadership capabilities that will make the greatest difference.
The work remains connected to real leadership situations. These may include a promotion, a new organizational mandate, a significant team challenge, a major change initiative, or preparation for a future role.
Between sessions, the leader may work through practice cases, apply new approaches, gather feedback, or conduct structured experiments in her organization.
The Insight Leadership Flight Simulator™
The Executive Year includes twelve months of work with a member of the Leadership Faculty, the Insight 360 Evaluation, the Insight Leadership Skill Assessment, and access to the Insight Leadership Flight Simulator.
Each session in the Flight Simulator puts the leader inside a specific kind of adaptive challenge, the kind with no ready answer, where the leader has to learn her way through. She takes a role, works through the decision points against competing interests, and reviews what she chose in a debrief afterward. A session can also be built around a situation the leader is facing now.
- Leading a restructure and culture change
- Integrating a merger
- Scaling an organization quickly
- Restoring innovation against entrenched factions
Grounded in Established Frameworks
Our coaching methodology is built upon a foundation of diverse and complementary frameworks. Central to our approach is the Adaptive Leadership framework, developed by Professor Ronald Heifetz at the Harvard Kennedy School, which equips leaders to navigate the increasingly complex and interconnected challenges of leading today. We also incorporate principles from the Crucial Conversations framework by Kerry Patterson and Joseph Grenny, as well as Negotiation and Mediation theory, principles of Influence, best practices in People Management, Systems Theory, and other relevant approaches.
Continuity
The relationship with the Leadership Faculty member allows the work to deepen over time. Early sessions may focus on diagnosis and immediate priorities. Later work can examine the results of experiments, connect patterns across different situations, and develop more complex leadership capabilities.
The Executive Year is especially valuable for leaders whose roles are changing quickly or whose development cannot be reduced to one issue.
It offers continuity. The leader does not have to begin again each time a new challenge emerges. The faculty member already understands the context, the history of the work, the leader's ambitions, and the patterns that have appeared over time. This creates the possibility of development that is both responsive and cumulative.
